EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment when the crowd of Parisians followed King Charles X of France as he left the city and headed for Rambouillet in August 1830. The monarch's departure marked the beginning of the July Revolution, which would ultimately lead to his abdication and the end of the Bourbon monarchy. The photograph, taken circa 1830, depicts a sea of people, mostly men, making their way through the streets of Paris, following their king in a show of loyalty or out of fear of the unknown. The atmosphere is tense, with the faces of the Parisians expressing a range of emotions, from determination to apprehension. King Charles X, who is not visible in the photograph, had ruled France since 1824, but his reign was marked by political instability and economic hardship. The people of Paris had grown disillusioned with his rule, and when the news broke that a liberal government had been formed in Bordeaux, the capital of the southwestern region of France, the Parisians took to the streets in protest. The king, fearing for his safety, decided to leave Paris and head for Rambouillet, a royal chateau located about 50 kilometers south of the city. The decision to follow him was a significant one, as it marked the beginning of the revolution that would ultimately lead to the establishment of the Second French Republic. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in French history, when the people of Paris took to the streets to demand change and shape their own destiny. It is a testament to the power of the crowd and the enduring spirit of the French people.
