This historic photograph captures the moment in July 1901 when Brazilian aviation pioneer, Alberto Santos-Dumont, attempted to fly around the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris in his airship, the Demoiselle. Santos-Dumont had been challenged by the French newspaper Le Matin to complete a circuit around the Tower within 30 minutes to win a substantial prize. The aviator, who was known for his groundbreaking achievements in aviation, was determined to accept the challenge and make history. In this image, we see Santos-Dumont, dressed in a stylish suit and hat, standing confidently beside his Demoiselle as it is tethered to the ground.
