The cardinals, dressed in their red robes and tall, pointed hats, are seen here opening the gates of three major basilicas in Rome: San Giovanni Laterano, Santa Maria Maggiore, and San Paolo. The Papal Jubilee, a significant event in the Catholic Church, occurs when the Pope declares a Holy Year, granting all the faithful a plenary indulgence, or the remission of all temporal punishment due to sin.
