In this enchanting illustration from Baron Friedrich de la Motte Fouque's fairy tale "Undine," published in 1812, Palemon, a knight, is seen in a silhouetted embrace with the water sprite, Undine. The moon casts a silver glow over the scene as they share a fatal kiss, sealing their love but ultimately leading to Palemon's demise. This poignant moment was brought to life on stage by the Royal Ballet in 1958, during a production that celebrated the timeless tale of love, faithfulness, and the supernatural. The story goes that Palemon, an unfaithful knight, had married Undine, a water sprite, under the condition that she would remain human and be granted the gift of a soul. However, when he discovered her true nature, he threatened to leave her. Desperate to keep him, Undine demanded that he swear an oath of loyalty, but Palemon, fearing the consequences, refused. In retaliation, she returned to her watery realm, vowing to take his life if he ever broke his promise. At their wedding feast, Palemon, unable to resist Undine's charms, succumbed to her embrace and shared the fatal kiss. As he died in her arms, Undine wept and begged for forgiveness. In the end, she was granted redemption and the couple was reunited in the afterlife.
