Our Local Express (2/2) - The Unbearable Lightness of Rail Travel

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this delightfully satirical postcard from the early 1900s, we find ourselves aboard the "Our Local Express (2/2)" - a train service that promises speed and efficiency, but delivers an amusing dose of the absurd instead. The coaches of this express train are filled with a motley crew of passengers, each more comically engaged in their own pursuits than paying attention to the journey at hand. A man in a suit, martin in hand, seems to be enjoying a leisurely game of cards. Another, Anderson, is fast asleep, oblivious to the world around him. Meanwhile, the staff on board appear to be in no rush to get things moving. The signalman, with a silly grin on his face, waves a red flag at the approaching train, while the engine driver looks on in disbelief as his horse-drawn train is being slowly pulled by a scotsman in a red box. The problems with the express service seem to be many. The carriages are sedate and lazy, with passengers taking their sweet time to flag down the train when it approaches a station. The fares, no doubt, are ridiculous, but who can be in a hurry when traveling on such a ridiculous train? As the train slowly chugs along, one can't help but laugh at the silly antics of the staff and passengers. The express service may be slow, but it's certainly a unique and humorous way to travel. This charming postcard, from the Mary Evans / Grenville Collins Postcard Collection, offers a lighthearted look at the quirks and eccentricities of rail travel in the early 1900s. It's a reminder that sometimes, the journey is just as important as the destination.
