EDITORS COMMENTS
Once upon a time in the quaint village of Cynicus, the locals were known for their love of cricket and their penchant for a good laugh. The arrival of the Our Local Express train service was no exception to this tradition. This satirical print from the Mary Evans / Grenville Collins Postcard Collection, dated 1907, captures the playful spirit of the community as they poke fun at the slow and sedate nature of their express train service. The image shows a group of railway staff, dressed in their red uniforms, gathered around the train as if trying to push it along. The engine, with its silly "Express" label, is barely moving, and the coaches seem to be following at a snail's pace. In the foreground, a signalman waves a red flag, adding to the humor of the scene. The coaches are filled with passengers, some of whom are seen peering out of the windows with amused expressions. Cricket bats and balls are visible in the background, hinting at the passengers' true priority - their love for the game. Anderson and Martin, two of the railway staff, are seen in the midst of a joke, adding to the lighthearted atmosphere. The caption "Slowly but surely, the Our Local Express is on its way" further emphasizes the satirical tone of the print. Despite the apparent problems with the train service, the locals take it all in stride, finding humor in the ridiculous situation. The Our Local Express may have been slow, but it was a beloved part of the community, bringing people together in their shared love of cricket and laughter.
