Orpheus and Eurydice,

EDITORS COMMENTS
a classic mythological tale of love and loss, comes to life in this 1914 postcard from Mary Evans Picture Library. In this fifth and final installment of the series, the intrepid musician Orpheus, played by an expressive actor, is seen turning back to gaze at his beloved Eurydice as they make their way up from the underworld. The haunting expression on his face betrays the forbidden desire that has led to their downfall. The historic scene is set against a backdrop of a dimly lit, rocky landscape, evoking the otherworldly atmosphere of the myth. Orpheus' determined stride and Eurydice's outstretched hand, reaching for him, add to the sense of tension and anticipation. The actor's theatrical performance is palpable, drawing the viewer into the story and allowing them to experience the emotional depth of this ancient myth. The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is one of the most enduring stories in Western literature and art. According to legend, Orpheus, a gifted musician and poet, was able to charm the gods with his music and persuade them to allow him to retrieve his wife Eurydice from the underworld on the condition that he not look back at her until they had both reached the surface. However, as they neared the exit, Orpheus' curiosity got the better of him, and he looked back to ensure that she was following him. In doing so, he lost her forever, condemning them both to eternal separation. This beautiful postcard is a testament to the enduring power of this ancient story and the ability of live performance to transport us to another time and place. The actor's poignant portrayal of Orpheus' moment of weakness and the hauntingly beautiful setting serve as a poignant reminder of the consequences of looking back on the past and the importance of staying true to the promises we make to those we love.
