EDITORS COMMENTS
Orpheus, the legendary musician and poet from Greek mythology, embarks on a perilous journey to the underworld in this theatrical performance, as depicted in this beautiful postcard from 1914. In this third installment of a series of five postcards from Mary Evans Picture Library, Orpheus is shown with determined resolve as he descends into the dark and mysterious realm of the dead, guided only by the belief in his power to charm the gods and godsesses with his enchanting music. The set design is reminiscent of the classical and historical traditions, with intricate details and an authentic feel that transport the viewer back in time. The finely dressed actors portraying Orpheus and Eurydice add to the sense of grandeur and drama, as they bring the ancient story to life. Orpheus and Eurydice, a timeless tale of love and loss, has been retold through the ages, and this postcard offers a unique glimpse into its theatrical interpretation over a century ago. The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice tells the story of their tragic separation, when Eurydice dies and Orpheus bravely ventures into the underworld to try and bring her back. With his music as his only weapon, he charms the rulers of the underworld, Hades and Persephone, and is granted the condition that he may lead Eurydice back to the land of the living, as long as he does not look back at her until they have both reached the surface. However, Orpheus' doubt and fear ultimately lead him to break this condition, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of his beloved Eurydice once again. This postcard, with its captivating image and rich historical context, offers a glimpse into the enduring power of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice and the human desire to find solace and meaning in the face of loss.
