EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing historical image, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, showcases two distinct species of opossums: the Saragoy, or Mulucca Opossum from the East Indies on the left, and the Murine Opossum from the warmer regions of South America on the right. Both opossums belong to the order Diprotodontia, which means "two-toed tooth-grinder," but their physical characteristics and habitats differ significantly. The Saragoy Opossum, depicted on the left, is also known as the Bearded or Hog-nosed Opossum. It is native to the East Indies and Southeast Asia. The Saragoy has a distinctive appearance, with a long snout, a bearded face, and a prehensile tail used for grasping branches. Its fur is typically grayish-brown, and it has a body length of around 20 inches. The Murine Opossum, on the right, is native to South America and is the most common opossum species found in the region. It is smaller in size, with a body length of around 12 inches, and has a more typical opossum appearance with a pointed snout, pink nose, and a white, fur-covered tail. The image, created by the renowned natural history illustrator, Thomas Bewick, in 1790, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these two opossum species. The Saragoy Opossum was known in the East Indies, while the Murine Opossum was just beginning to be explored and documented in South America. This illustration not only showcases the unique features of each species but also highlights the growing interest in the natural world during the late 18th century.
