Fire broke out on the L Alantiique in the early hours of 4th January 1933, at 6am the abandon ship order was given. The liner had no passengers on board, only crew, many were picked up in the British steamer, Ford Castle. One lifeboat was thrown into the sea, drowning some of the occupants. EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical print captures a unique feature on board the French luxury liner, L'Atlantique - a decorative chapel where passengers could attend religious services and practice their devotions during their voyage. However, tragedy struck on the early morning of January 4th, 1933 when a fire broke out on the ship. Thankfully, there were no passengers on board at the time, only crew members who had to abandon ship as the flames engulfed the vessel. Many of them were rescued by the British steamer Ford Castle, but unfortunately, some lost their lives when one lifeboat was thrown into the sea. For hours, the burning liner drifted in the ocean as salvage crafts were unable to approach due to the intense heat. Eventually, a French ship was able to secure a line and bring her into Cherbourg. This image serves as an important reminder of both the glamour and danger that came with luxury travel by sea in this era. The ornate chapel stands in stark contrast to the chaos and destruction caused by the fire that ultimately led to L'Atlantique's demise.
