The state of South Australia
January 6, 2008 - Satellite view of the state of South Australia. South Australia is bordered by New South Wales in the east, Queensland in the northeast, the Northern Territory in the north, and Western Australia in the west. The Simpson Desert is at the top of the image, near where the Northern Territory and Queensland border New South Wales. South of the Simpson Desert is the Lake Eyre Basin. The Lake Eyre Basin covers 1/6 of Australia, including parts of Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory, and western New South Wales. All the rivers in this region flow inland (when there is rain to fill them), towards Lake Eyre, the lowest point in Australia. Lake Eyre is usually a dry, salt lake - it only fills approximately once a century. Lake Eyre is visible on this image as white spots near the top left corner of the image.
A bit further south is another salt lake, called Lake Torrens. It also appears white on the satellite image as it is also usually a dry salt flat. It has reportedly only been filled with water once in the past 150 years. This lake bed lies north of the Spencer Gulf, in fact it is part of the same rift valley. The Spencer Gulf is a large inlet on the southern coast of Australia. It is west of a second large inlet, the Gulf of St. Vincent. The capital of South Australia, Adelaide, lies on its east coast
