EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the image of Oberleutnant Max Immelmann, a German air ace renowned for his innovative dogfight tactics during World War I. Born in 1890, Immelmann began his military career as an infantryman before transferring to the newly formed Imperial German Air Service in 1912. He quickly distinguished himself as a skilled aviator and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1914. Immelmann's fame grew as he racked up an impressive tally of aerial victories, earning him the prestigious Pour le Mérite military order, also known as the Blue Max, in 1915. His tactics, which emphasized close-range engagements and quick maneuvers, proved effective against the Allied forces. However, on 18 June 1916, during a dogfight over northern France, Immelmann's luck ran out. While pursuing an enemy plane, his Albatros D.III fighter suffered engine trouble, causing him to crash near Sallaumines. Despite his best efforts to bail out, Immelmann tragically lost his life in the accident. This photograph, taken between 1914 and 1916, shows Immelmann in his distinctive iron cross-emblazoned uniform, standing confidently next to his aeroplane. The image is a poignant reminder of the bravery and skill of the pilots who took to the skies during the Great War, and the ultimate sacrifice they made in the pursuit of victory.
