EDITORS COMMENTS
Oak Apple Day at Chelsea Hospital: A Traditional Celebration of English Monarchy and Military History This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment during Oak Apple Day celebrations at Chelsea Hospital in London. The day, which falls on May 29th, commemorates the restoration of the English monarchy in 1660, marking the return of King Charles II to the throne after the Civil War. In the image, the Duke of Boston, later Lord Roberts, takes the salute of the Chelsea Pensioners as they proudly march past the statue of King Charles II. The statue, a cherished symbol of the monarchy's rich history, is covered in oak branches in honor of the occasion. The elderly soldiers, many of whom have served their country with distinction, proudly bear the traditions of their past. The custom of covering the statue with oak branches dates back to 1660, when it is said that King Charles II hid in an oak tree to escape capture during the English Civil War. Upon his restoration, the King ordered that an oak tree be planted in the grounds of each royal palace, and that the tree be decorated on May 29th each year to celebrate the event. The tradition of Oak Apple Day continues to this day, with the Chelsea Pensioners, retired soldiers from the British Army, taking part in the annual parade. The sight of the soldiers, many of advanced age, marching past the statue of their monarch, covered in oak branches, is a powerful reminder of the deep historical ties that bind the English monarchy and military to their people.
