EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'The Queen of Hearts, Caldecott, 4 of 8 (and took them right away)', is a historical depiction of a scene from Lewis Carroll's beloved nursery rhyme, 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. The Queen of Hearts, a character renowned for her fiery temper and her famous line, "Off with their heads!", is shown here in a moment of mischief and playfulness. In this illustration, the Queen, dressed in her regal attire, is seen playing a game of cards with three knaves. The fourth knave, who has been caught cheating, is being reprimanded by the Queen, who has just taken the offending cards from his hand. The Queen's expression is a mixture of amusement and annoyance, as she wields her horn as a makeshift alarm to signal the end of the game. This illustration, created in 1881, is a Caldecott print, named after Randolph Caldecott, a renowned English illustrator and graphic artist. The print is part of a series of illustrations from 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass', which were published in the late 19th century. The image captures the whimsy and charm of Carroll's classic work, as well as the historical context of the time. The use of intricate details, such as the Queen's elaborate headdress and the knaves' expressive faces, adds to the overall enchantment of the scene. Despite the Queen's stern demeanor and the crime of card-stealing, the illustration is filled with a sense of playfulness and light-heartedness, making it a timeless piece of art that continues to delight and captivate audiences of all ages.
