EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from the Nurnberg Chronik 1493, also known as the Liber Chronicarum or the Nuremberg Chronicle, which is considered the greatest and earliest illustrated history book in the world. Printed in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1493, this incunabulum (a term used for early printed books) is a visual and historical masterpiece that chronicles the history of the world up to 1500. The scene depicted in this photograph is taken from the section of the book that recounts the biblical story of the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. According to the Old Testament, these cities were punished by God for their wickedness, and the inhabitants were destroyed. In this image, the cities lie in ruins, with Lots wife, who had been told not to look back, turning to admire the destruction and being transformed into a pillar of salt. The rest of Lot's family, however, are shown escaping with the help of angels. This print is a powerful example of the role that printed communications played in the dissemination of historical knowledge during the late Middle Ages. The intricate illustrations and detailed text in the Nurnberg Chronik provided a visual and textual record of history that was accessible to a wider audience than ever before. The book was produced using the latest printing technology of the time, allowing for the mass production of high-quality images and text. This photograph is a testament to the enduring power of historical records and the importance of preserving and sharing knowledge across generations. The Nurnberg Chronik remains an invaluable resource for scholars and historians today, offering a unique window into the past and a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that has shaped our world.
