This evocative photograph captures the determination and daring spirit of French World War I flying aces Charles Nungesser and François Coli as they prepare for their historic, yet ultimately fatal, attempt to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean in the Oiseau Blanc (White Bird) aircraft. Dated 1927, the image shows Nungesser and Coli standing before a large crowd in Paris, France, as they bid farewell to their loved ones and the public before embarking on their daring journey. Nungesser, a decorated military pilot with the distinction of being the first French pilot to score five aerial victories in a single day during World War I, and Coli, a skilled mechanic and engineer, had already made headlines with their previous transatlantic attempts. However, their third attempt in the Oiseau Blanc, a custom-built monoplane designed by the renowned French aviation engineer, Henry Farman, would prove to be their last. The aircraft, nicknamed the "White Bird," was equipped with advanced features for the time, including a long-range fuel tank and a streamlined design. Despite their preparations and the optimism of the public, the duo and their aircraft disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean on May 8, 1927, just days after the successful transatlantic flight of Charles Lindbergh in the Spirit of St. Louis. The cause of their disappearance remains a mystery, with theories ranging from mechanical failure to navigational errors.
