EDITORS COMMENTS
October 1914: Men of the Northumberland Hussars and their horses boarding the SS Minneapolis at Southampton Harbour for the journey to Zeebrugge, Belgium, during the First World War. In the early days of the conflict, the Northumberland Hussars, a cavalry regiment of the British Army, were among the troops sent to Belgium to support the Belgian military against the invading German forces. The soldiers and their horses are seen here carefully making their way onto the deck of the SS Minneapolis, a passenger and cargo ship that had been commandeered for military transport. The distinctive uniforms of the Northumberland Hussars, with their red jackets, white facings, and yellow lanyards, are on full display as the men prepare for the arduous sea voyage. The ship's funnel belches smoke into the air, a reminder of the long journey ahead. The horses, tethered to the sides of the ship, appear calm and obedient, despite the unfamiliar surroundings and the commotion around them. The soldiers and their mounts would have faced many challenges during their time at sea, including rough weather, limited food and water, and the constant threat of U-boat attacks. Once they reached Zeebrugge, they would disembark and join the fighting on the European continent, contributing to the Allied efforts to repel the German advance. This poignant image captures a moment of determination and resilience in the face of adversity, as the Northumberland Hussars set sail for the battlefields of Belgium.
