EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, a group of seven North Staffordshire soldiers are seen making their way along a dusty road towards Baku, Armenia in August 1918. These brave men were part of the Dunsterforce, a British military mission sent to support the newly established Democratic Republic of Armenia and the independent Republic of Azerbaijan during the Armenian-Azerbaijani War and the larger Caucasus Campaign towards the end of the First World War. The soldiers are dressed in their distinctive uniforms, with helmets on their heads and pith helmets slung over their shoulders. They carry rifles and equipment, their faces etched with the weariness of long marches and hard fighting. In the background, a railway train can be seen passing through a culvert, while a station and buildings are visible in the distance. The North Staffordshire Regiment, also known as the "Staffords," played a significant role in the Caucasus Campaign. They were tasked with securing key railway lines and communications routes, as well as providing support to local forces in the region. The soldiers in this photograph are likely making their way to Baku, a strategic city and major oil production center, which was a key objective for both the British and the opposing forces. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the North Staffordshire soldiers and other British troops during the First World War, as they fought to secure key territories and support allied forces in the Caucasus region. The image also underscores the complex and often overlooked military campaigns that took place outside of the traditional Western Front during the war.
