North Foreland, 1867: A Scouting Expedition led by Sir Baden-Powell This photograph, taken in 1867, depicts a group of intrepid explorers standing atop the rugged cliffs of North Foreland, a coastal area located in Broadstairs, Kent, England. The association of these individuals with the scouting movement, however, comes not from any formal connection to the Boy Scouts or Girl Guides founded by Sir Robert Baden-Powell in 1907, but rather from the resemblance of their attire and the spirit of adventure they exude. Sir Baden-Powell himself is believed to have visited North Foreland during his military career, serving as Commandant of the Royal Artillery's School of Musketry at Woolwich from 1862 to 1867.
