Fence and dirt road leading to San Juan Mountain Range, Ridgway, Colorado, USA

The San Juan Mountains are a high and rugged mountain range in the Rocky Mountains in southwestern Colorado and northwestern New Mexico. The area is highly mineralized (the Colorado Mineral Belt) and figured in the gold and silver mining industry of early Colorado. Major towns, all old mining camps, include Creede, Lake City, Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride. Large scale mining has ended in the region. The San Juan and Uncompahgre National Forests cover a large portion of the San Juan Mountains

'Southwest Pass', 1872. Creator: Henry Duff Linton

'Southwest Pass', 1872. Sailing boat passing a navigation aid on the Mississippi River Delta on the south coast of the USA. 'The mouth of the river...was found to consist of numerous arms, or passes, through low swamps and islands formed by the sediment brought down by the river. This net-work of creeks, bayous, and passes, is known as the Delta of the Mississippi. It covers an area estimated at fourteen thousand square miles, and is slowly advancing into the Gulf by the shoaling caused by the deposition of fresh sediment brought down by the river'. Colorado River View

The Colorado River (near Lake Mead) is one of the principal rivers of the Southwestern United States and northern Mexico (the other being the Rio Grande). The 1, 450-mile (2, 330A?km) Colorado River drains an expansive, arid watershed that encompasses parts of seven U.S. and two Mexican states. Rising in the central Rocky Mountains in the U.S., the river flows generally southwest across the Colorado Plateau and through the Grand Canyon before reaching Lake Mead on the Arizona - Nevada border, where it turns south toward the international border
