EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Carolina-Andrietta Ahlsell Nobel, mother of renowned inventor and philanthropist Alfred Nobel, in an intimate moment circa 1853. Born on October 24, 1830, in Stockholm, Sweden, Carolina-Andrietta was the daughter of a wealthy Swedish businessman, Karl August Ahlsell, and his wife, Hedvig Charlotte Amalia. She married Immanuel Nobel, a Russian-Swedish engineer and inventor, in 1856, and together they had eight children. Carolina-Andrietta's life was marked by both tragedy and triumph. She endured the loss of her husband in 1868 and several of her children at a young age. However, she also bore and raised the man who would go on to revolutionize the world with the invention of dynamite and establish the Nobel Prizes. Alfred Nobel was deeply influenced by his mother's strength and resilience in the face of adversity. He once said, "My mother's love and her tears were the only influences that could reach my heart." The Nobel Foundation's mission to recognize and reward those who have made outstanding contributions to humanity can be traced back to the profound impact his mother had on his life. This photograph, taken around the time of her marriage to Immanuel Nobel, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who played an essential role in shaping the legacy of one of history's most influential figures. The image, from Mary Evans Picture Library, invites us to reflect on the complexities of family life and the enduring influence of a mother's love.
