EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Ninette De Valois, a renowned figure in the world of ballet, in the prime of her dancing career with the Ballet Russe. Born on February 15, 1898, in London, De Valois began her dance training at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of the ballet world. In this image, she exudes grace and poise as she performs, showcasing the artistry and skill that would later make her a revered teacher, director, and choreographer. De Valois' association with the Ballet Russe began in 1921, and she became a principal dancer with the company in 1924. During her time with the Ballet Russe, she worked alongside some of the most influential figures in modern dance, including Michel Fokine, Leonide Massine, and Bronislava Nijinska. These experiences shaped her perspective on dance and laid the foundation for her groundbreaking contributions to the art form. After retiring from the stage in 1932, De Valois turned her attention to teaching and choreography. In 1935, she founded the Sadler's Wells Ballet, which would later become the Royal Ballet. Her innovative approach to ballet and commitment to nurturing new talent helped establish the company as a leading force in the dance world. Her influence on the art form continues to be felt today, as her legacy lives on through the generations of dancers and choreographers she inspired.
