1828 1889 Activist Classic Exiled Nikolai Radical Revolutionary Siberia Wrote Years
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stoic and determined visage of Nikolai Chernyshevsky (1828-1889), a Russian revolutionary thinker and activist who spent 24 years of his life in exile in Siberia. Born into a middle-class family in Kazan, Russia, Chernyshevsky became an influential figure in the radical circles of St. Petersburg in the mid-19th century. He was a staunch advocate for social and political reform, and his groundbreaking work, "What is to be done?" (Chto delat?), published in 1863, became a bible for the Russian revolutionary movement. The novel's protagonist, Rakhmetov, embodies Chernyshevsky's belief in the transformative power of individual will and self-discipline in bringing about social change. However, Chernyshevsky's radical ideas and activism did not go unnoticed by the Russian authorities. In 1866, he was arrested and exiled to Siberia, where he spent the next two decades laboring in gold mines and working as a schoolteacher. Despite the harsh conditions of his exile, Chernyshevsky continued to write and think, and his works were smuggled out of Siberia and circulated among the revolutionary circles in Europe and Russia. His ideas influenced a generation of Russian revolutionaries, including Lenin, who famously said that "What is to be done?" was his "bible." This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, captures Chernyshevsky in his later years, with the lines on his face reflecting the hardships he endured during his long exile. Yet, his piercing gaze and determined expression betray a deep sense of conviction and unwavering commitment to his beliefs. Chernyshevsky's legacy as a revolutionary thinker and activist continues to inspire generations of political and social reformers around the world.
