EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the Dendal, or marketplace, of Kukawa, Nigeria, in West Africa, as it appeared in April 1851. The scene was captured by the renowned German explorer and travel writer, Dr. Heinrich Barth, during his extensive journey through Africa. Barth, a brilliant scholar and linguist, embarked on his African expedition in 1849, driven by an insatiable curiosity for the unknown and a desire to expand European knowledge of the continent. His journey took him through the Sahara Desert, the Sudan region, and eventually to the heart of the West African Sokoto Caliphate, where he visited Kukawa. The Dendal, a bustling marketplace, was a significant commercial and cultural hub in the Sokoto Caliphate. It was here that Barth met with local traders, merchants, and artisans, exchanging goods and ideas. The marketplace was a vibrant mosaic of various ethnic groups, each bringing their unique wares and traditions to the table. Barth was deeply impressed by the market's organization and the industriousness of its inhabitants. He sketched the scene with great detail, capturing the essence of the place and its people. The print showcases the market's sprawling layout, with rows of stalls selling textiles, grains, livestock, and other goods. The people in the foreground are engaged in various activities, from haggling over prices to loading and unloading goods. This print is a testament to Barth's keen observation skills and his ability to document history as it unfolded. It offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world was still largely unexplored and the wonders of Africa were just beginning to be revealed to the Western world.
