This image showcases General Nicolas Bravo, a prominent Mexican soldier and statesman, during his tenure as Vice-President of the Mexican Federation from 1861 to 1863. Born on January 22, 1787, in San Felipe Hidalgo, Mexico, Bravo rose to prominence as a military leader during the Mexican War of Independence under the command of Augustin de Iturbide. He played a crucial role in the Battle of Los Angeles in 1829, which secured Mexico's independence from Spain. Bravo's political career began in earnest when he was appointed Governor of Oaxaca in 1832. He later served as a senator and deputy in the Mexican Congress. In 1861, Bravo was elected Vice-President of the Mexican Federation under the presidency of Benito Juarez. During his time in office, Bravo worked to strengthen the federal government and maintain order amidst the political turmoil of the period. Despite his military and political accomplishments, Bravo is perhaps best known for his role in the Reform War, which began in 1858. Bravo led the liberal forces against the conservative forces, advocating for religious reform, land reform, and the separation of church and state. He played a key role in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, which is now celebrated as Mexico's National Day. This photograph captures Bravo in his later years, with a stern expression and a military uniform adorned with medals and ribbons.
