Accused Christians Cithara Days Nero Rages Starting

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intensity of the Great Fire of Rome as it ravaged the ancient city for nine consecutive days in the summer of 64 AD. The historical event, which is believed to have started in the night of July 18, engulfed a large part of the city, leaving thousands of people displaced and many more dead. Amidst the chaos and destruction, the Roman emperor Nero was accused of having started the fire and fiddling while Rome burned. Nero, who was not in Rome during the initial outbreak of the fire, was later rumored to have played his cithara, a type of ancient musical instrument, as the city burned. The accusations against Nero were fueled by the fact that he later ordered the rebuilding of Rome, using the public funds to construct a grand palace complex, the Domus Aurea, or the Golden House, in the area where the fire had devastated. The Christians, a religious minority in Rome, were also blamed for the fire and were subjected to widespread persecution. Nero, who was known for his dislike of the Christian faith, used the opportunity to scapegoat the community and unleash a wave of violence against them. This photographic print, from the extensive archives of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the ancient city of Rome during one of its most tumultuous moments in history. The image, with its dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, and the sense of chaos and destruction it conveys, serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring power of historical events to captivate and intrigue us, even as the sands of time continue to shift.
