EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures Horatio, Lord Nelson (1758-1805), one of the most celebrated figures in British naval history, displaying his empty right sleeve during a ceremony in 1801. The amputation of his arm, which took place following the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797, became a symbol of his heroism and determination. Nelson, a renowned naval commander, rose to prominence during the late 18th century, playing a pivotal role in the Napoleonic Wars. His innovative tactics and unwavering leadership earned him the admiration of his men and the respect of his enemies. However, it was his loss of his right arm that would become synonymous with his legend. The Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, fought on July 21, 1797, was a turning point in the war against Spain. Nelson, commanding the British fleet, led a daring and successful attack on the Spanish harbor. However, during the engagement, he was hit by a sniper's bullet, which shattered his right elbow. Despite the injury, Nelson refused to abandon the battlefield and continued to give orders until the British victory was secured. Following the battle, Nelson's arm was amputated above the elbow, but he remained undeterred. He continued to serve in the navy, leading his men to victory in the Battle of the Nile in 1798, which effectively ended any threat of a French invasion of Egypt. This photograph, taken from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a poignant reminder of Nelson's indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to duty, even in the face of adversity.
