EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the legendary Australian soprano, Nellie Melba (Helen Porter Mitchell), in the midst of a historic recording session at Chelmsford in 1920. Melba, who was born in Richmond, Victoria, in 1861, was already an established international star by the time this image was taken. Known for her beautiful voice and captivating stage presence, she had made her debut at the Covent Garden Opera in London in 1888 and went on to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Paris Opera. In this photograph, Melba is seen in profile, her expressive face focused intently on the microphone before her. The microphone, a relatively new technology at the time, would have allowed her voice to be recorded and preserved for posterity. The image exudes an air of determination and concentration, as Melba prepared to leave her mark on the burgeoning world of recorded music. The setting for this recording session was Chelmsford, a town in Essex, England. The choice of location was likely due to the advanced recording equipment and facilities available there. Melba's recording career began in earnest in the late 1890s, and she continued to make recordings throughout her long and distinguished career. Her recordings, many of which are still available today, offer a precious glimpse into the past, allowing us to hear the voice of one of the greatest sopranos of all time. This photograph is a poignant reminder of Melba's enduring legacy and her place in the annals of musical history. It also serves as a testament to the power of technology to preserve and share the art of music, connecting us to the past and enriching our present.
