The scene captures the final moments of the engagement between a French fleet, commanded by the legendary Admiral Jean Bart (1621-1702), and a combined Dutch and English fleet under Admiral de Frise. The battle took place in the North Sea, off the coast of Texel, a Dutch island in the Netherlands. The French fleet, consisting of 25 ships, was determined to break the Dutch blockade of the Scheldt River, which was essential for the supply of food and resources to the French army in Flanders. The Dutch and English, with a fleet of 32 ships, were equally determined to prevent the French from reaching their objective. The battle raged for several hours, with both sides suffering heavy losses. However, Admiral Jean Bart's tactical brilliance and determination proved decisive. The French fleet managed to outmaneuver the Dutch and English, inflicting significant damage on their opponents. The Dutch flagship, the Prins Willem V, was among the ships that were captured by the French. The victory at Texel was a significant turning point in the Nine Years' War (1688-1697) between France and the Grand Alliance of Austria, the Dutch Republic, England, and Spain. It allowed the French to resupply their army in Flanders and secure their position in Europe.
