EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph print captures the enigmatic figure of Metacomet, also known as King Philip, the Sachem of the Wampanoags of New England during the pivotal period of 1675-76. Metacomet, an American Native leader, is renowned for his role in the infamous King Philip's War, which marked a significant turning point in the history of New England. Born around 1641, Metacomet was the son of the influential Wampanoag Sachem, Massasoit. He ascended to the position of Sachem following his father's death in 1662. Metacomet's reign was marked by a growing tension between the Native American population and the English settlers. The escalating conflict, fueled by land disputes, religious differences, and cultural misunderstandings, ultimately led to the outbreak of King Philip's War in 1675. The war, which lasted for over a year, resulted in the deaths of thousands of Native Americans and English settlers. Metacomet's ultimate defeat came in August 1676, when he was killed during a skirmish in the woods of Rhode Island. The war marked the end of the Wampanoag's power and influence in New England. This photograph print, with its haunting and evocative image of Metacomet, offers a glimpse into the complex and tumultuous history of Native American-European relations in New England during the late 17th century. It serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of colonialism and the lasting consequences of cultural misunderstandings and conflict.
