'The Forth Bridge', LNER poster, 1928

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway LNER to promote rail services to Scotland. The poster shows a view of The Forth Bridge, which crosses the estuary of the River Forth in Scotland to connect the East Coast route between London and Aberdeen. It was designed by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjemin Baker, and was opened by the Prince of Wales in 1890. Artwork by Henry George Gawthorn (1879-1941), who started out as an architect but later turned to pictorial art. He wrote several books on poster design and publicity and produced posters for LNER. He often included a self-portrait in his posters, complete with pince-nez and a panama hat

Glasgow Electric', BR (ScR) poster, c 1960s. Poster produced for British Railways (BR) Scottish Region (SR) showing a Glasgow electric locomotive service, bound for Helensburgh. Artwork by Terence Cuneo (1907-1996). Cuneo trained at the Slade and Chelsea schools of art in London and from the 1940s onwards was commissioned to produced artwork for railway posters. Cuneo was also a prolific painter of portraits, ceremonial and military subjects. Printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd, London and Dunstable

'The Tay Bridge', BR poster, 1957

Poster produced for British Railways (BR) to promote rail travel to and within Scotland. The poster shows a locomotive travelling over the Tay Bridge, with the waters of the Firth of Tay streching out on either side. To produce the preliminary drawings for this painting, the diesel locomotive and train were posed for the artist. Winds of up to 40mph blew through the girders of the Tay Bridge as he sketched the scene. Artwork by Terence Cuneo, son of the artists Cyrus and Nell Cuneo. He studied at the Chelsea and Slade Art Schools and in addition to a long career designing railway posters, he also painted portraits (including royal portraits) and ceremonial and military subjects
