Tynemouth, LNER poster, 1926

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail services to the coastal town of Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear. The poster shows two women and a man looking out over the seaside from a high incline. This poster was produced just before the General Strike in 1926. Economically, this was a bad year for the railways, especially the LNER. It was said afterwards that the publicity of 1926 had been the only bright feature for the railway. Artwork by Alfred Lambert (1902-1970), who studied art at the Allan-Frazer Art College in Arbroathy. He designed posters for LNER and London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) and illustrated books

National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the essence of Tynemouth, a charming coastal town in Tyne and Wear, during the 1920s. Produced by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), this poster aimed to entice travelers to explore the beauty of Tynemouth through their rail services. The artwork portrays two elegantly dressed women and a man standing atop a high incline, gazing out over the picturesque seaside. Created just before the tumultuous General Strike of 1926, this poster holds historical significance as it represents one of the few positive aspects for LNER during an economically challenging year for railways. Alfred Lambert, an accomplished artist who studied at Allan-Frazer Art College in Arbroathy, skillfully designed this piece. Lambert's talent extended beyond railway posters; he also contributed illustrations to various books. The serene beaches and stunning coastline depicted in this print evoke a sense of tranquility and allure that would have undoubtedly attracted visitors from near and far. This print serves as a reminder of simpler times when train travel was not only practical but also offered an opportunity for adventure and exploration along Britain's scenic coastlines. Preserved by the National Railway Museum, this image allows us to glimpse into both Tynemouth's past charm and its enduring appeal as a coastal destination.
