Passenger train at Nainpur, India, 1977

Passenger train pulled by a ZE42 steam locomotive at Nainpur, India 1977. The train is so crowded that passengers are hanging onto the doors. This train runs on a narrow gauge railway. To cope with Indias varied terrain, the Indian Railways used three gauges: 2 6, metre gauge and 5 6. Most of Indias railways were built between 1873 and 1923 under British rule. Steam locomotives were withdrawn on Indian Railways at the end of the 1990s

National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to Nainpur, India in 1977. The image showcases a bustling passenger train, pulled by the mighty ZE42 steam locomotive. As we delve into this snapshot of history, we are immediately struck by the sheer number of people crammed onto this train. Passengers can be seen hanging onto the doors, desperate to secure a spot for their journey. What makes this scene even more remarkable is that this particular train operates on a narrow gauge railway. In order to navigate India's diverse terrain, Indian Railways utilized three different gauges: 2'6", meter gauge, and 5'6". This ingenious adaptation allowed trains like these to traverse through challenging landscapes with relative ease. It is fascinating to note that most of India's extensive railway network was constructed between 1873 and 1923 during British rule. These railways played an instrumental role in connecting various regions of the country and facilitating transportation across vast distances. However, as time passed and technology advanced, steam locomotives were eventually phased out from Indian Railways by the late 1990s. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of an era when these magnificent machines ruled the tracks. Preserved within the National Railway Museum's collection, this print offers us a glimpse into India's rich rail heritage - capturing both its challenges and triumphs throughout history.
