'Wolsey Pageant, Ipswich, June 23-28', LNER poster, 1923-1947

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), promoting rail travel to the Wolsey Pageant in Ipswich, Suffolk, showing figures in 16th century dress representing Cardinal Wolsey, Henry VIII and other Tudor characters. The pageant was produced by Nugent Monck (1877-1958), founder of the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich. Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (1471-1530) was born in the county town of Ipswich and went on to become Lord Chancellor and Chaplain to King Henry VIII. Artwork by Picking

'Whitby: Then-Now', LNER poster, 1930-1947

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), promoting rail travel to the North Yorkshire resort of Whitby, the boyhood home of Captain James Cook (1728-79). The image shows Cook's ship 'Endeavour' leaving the port in 1768, bound for the Pacific on an expedition to observe the transit of Venus, while below, a contemporary view of the same area is shown. Cook's expedition of 1768-1771 culminated in the charting of New Zealand and the claiming of Australia for Britain. Artwork by Andrew Johnson
