'Norwich', LNER poster, 1932

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to Norwich, Norfolk. The poster shows a view of the cathedral city, with a river and boats in the foreground. Norwich Cathedral, which has the second highest spire in Britain, is seen in the background. Artwork by Fred Taylor (1875-1963), who was commissioned in 1930 to design four ceiling paintings for the Underwriting Room at Lloyd's and murals for Reed's Lacquer Room. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and other London galleries and worked for LNER, London Transport and several shipping companies. Dimensions: 1016mm x 635mm

'The Booklovers' Britain: Yarmouth', LNER poster, 1933

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to the Norfolk coastal resort of Yarmouth, where part of Charles Dickens's (1812-1870) novel, 'David Copperfield', was set. The illustration shows a scene from the book, with the young characters of David Copperfield and Little Emily seen in front of the Peggotty family home, which is formed from a disused boat. Artwork by Austin Cooper, a Canadian who studied art in Cardiff and Arbroath. He began his career as a commercial artist in Montreal, but returned to London in 1922 and designed posters for LNER, Indian State Railways and London Transport. His first show was held at the London Gallery in 1948

Norfolk. Nelson - Born Burnham Rectory 1758', BR (ER) poster, 1960. Poster produced for British Railways (BR) Eastern Region (ER), promoting rail travel to Norfolk, showing Lord Nelson (1758- 1805) on board ship during a sea battle. Nelson was born at Burnham Rectory in Norfolk, and in 1805, during the Napoleonic wars, became commander-in-chief of the Mediterranean fleet on board the flagship HMS 'Victory'. He was mortally wounded during the Battle of Trafalgar later that year. Artwork by Lance Cattermole. Printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd, London & Dunstable
