Dover for the Continent, BR poster, 1950
Poster produced for British Railways (BR) to promote train services to Dover, and then connections to the Continent. Two pictures, labelled Then and Now, point to the vast increase in frequency of cross-Channel sailings. In 1850, there was one sailing per week, but by 1950 this had increased to seven sailings per day. Artwork by Leslie Carr, who painted marine, architectural and river scenes and designed posters for Southern Railway (SR), London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) and British Railways

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Dover for the Continent" takes us back to 1950, when British Railways (BR) sought to promote their train services to Dover and the subsequent connections to the Continent. The poster, designed by the talented artist Leslie Carr, showcases two contrasting pictures labeled "Then" and "Now" highlighting the remarkable increase in cross-Channel sailings. In 1850, a mere once-a-week sailing was available for those seeking passage across the Channel. However, fast forward a century later, and we witness an astonishing transformation. By 1950, seven sailings per day were offered – a testament to technological advancements and growing demand for travel between Britain and Europe. Leslie Carr's artistic prowess shines through as he masterfully captures marine scenes with precision. Known for his expertise in painting architectural landmarks and river vistas, Carr had previously created stunning posters for Southern Railway (SR), London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), and now British Railways. As we gaze upon this historic print from the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, we are transported back in time. It serves as a reminder of how transportation has evolved over decades – from limited weekly voyages to multiple daily crossings that have brought people closer together than ever before. This artwork not only celebrates progress but also pays homage to all those who have contributed towards making these journeys possible throughout history.
