EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1910 takes us back in time to the enchanting Yorkshire Coast, as promoted by the Great Northern Railway (GNR). The poster, designed to entice travelers to this picturesque destination, showcases a delightful blend of whimsy and coastal beauty. Standing tall on the sandy beach is a fully-dressed walrus, an unexpected yet charming sight that immediately captures one's attention. A man stands beside him, waving cheerfully towards the viewer. Beneath this peculiar scene are written the words "They cheered like anything to see such quantities of sand" evoking a sense of joy and wonderment at the abundance of nature's gifts found along these shores. The artist behind this imaginative creation pays homage to Sir John Tenniel with his signature above it, accompanied by a note expressing acknowledgments and apologies for borrowing inspiration from Tenniel's iconic illustrations in Lewis Carroll's Alice books. Frank Henry Mason, renowned for his marine and coastal paintings inspired by his time spent at sea, skillfully brings together elements of fantasy and reality in this artwork. With its vibrant colors and intricate details, this poster transports us into a world where walruses stroll along sandy beaches while humans revel in their presence. Preserved by the National Railway Museum today, this historic print not only serves as a testament to GNR's promotional efforts but also reminds us of the enduring allure that lies within both literature and travel.
