EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the essence of Hull's bustling shipping industry in 1929. Created by renowned artist Henry George Gawthorn, this LNER poster was designed to promote the freight services offered by London & North Eastern Railway in the industrial area of Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire. The aerial view depicted in the artwork showcases the vast port at Hull, a crucial hub for trade and commerce during that era. Gawthorn's attention to detail is evident as he skillfully portrays the intricate network of docks and ships, highlighting the city's significance as Britain's cheapest port. Gawthorn himself was not only an artist but also an architect turned poster designer. His expertise in both fields shines through his work, making him one of the most sought-after artists of his time. Interestingly, he often included a self-portrait within his posters – a charming touch that adds personality to his creations. As we gaze upon this print today, it serves as a nostalgic reminder of Hull's rich maritime history and its vital role in supporting Britain's economy. The National Railway Museum proudly preserves this piece from their collection, allowing us to appreciate Gawthorn's talent and relive a bygone era when Hull stood tall as Britain’s gateway to international trade.
