'Bath - The Georgian City', BR poster, 1950

Poster produced by British Railways (BR) to promote rail travel to Bath, North East Somerset. The poster shows a view of the Pump Room, part of the baths built by the Romans who were drawn to Bath, which they named 'Aquae Sulis', because of its unique natural hot springs. In the 18th century, Bath was the most fashionable resort in England. Artwork by Claude Buckle (1905-1973), who originally trained as an architect, but later turned to pictorial art. He painted in both oil and watercolour and was a prolific poster artist for Great Western Railway (GWR) and BR. Much of his original poster artwork is held at the National Railway Museum

Artwork by Norman Wilkinson, who studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. 'Tynemouth', LNER poster, 1926

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail services to the coastal town of Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear. The poster shows two women and a man looking out over the seaside from a high incline. This poster was produced just before the General Strike in 1926. Economically, this was a bad year for the railways, especially the LNER. It was said afterwards that the publicity of 1926 had been the only bright feature for the railway. Artwork by Alfred Lambert (1902-1970), who studied art at the Allan-Frazer Art College in Arbroathy. He designed posters for LNER and London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) and illustrated books
