EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the young and regal presence of Napoleon II, also known as Napoleon Charles Bonaparte or the 'Eaglet,' the son of the legendary Napoleon I. Born on March 20, 1811, in Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria, Napoleon II was the heir to the Napoleonic Empire. His parents' marriage was a political alliance between France and Austria, and his father's hopes for a male heir were finally realized. This portrait, created in 1811, captures the young Napoleon II in his infancy, dressed in the finery of a future king. The painting, titled 'Napoleon II, King of Rome,' was produced during a time of great political instability in Europe, as Napoleon I's empire was crumbling, and the Congress of Vienna was in session, redrawing the map of Europe. Despite his title and lineage, Napoleon II spent most of his life in exile, first in Austria and later in England. In 1832, at the age of 21, he was created Duke of Reichstadt by his grandfather, Charles Ferdinand, Duke of Berry, the last legitimate male heir of the Bourbon monarchy in France. Napoleon II died in exile in England on July 22, 1873. This historical image offers a glimpse into the life of a figure who, despite his short reign and early death, remains an intriguing and important figure in European history. The portrait's elegant composition and the young Napoleon II's piercing gaze transport us back to a time of political upheaval and royal intrigue.
