December 15, 1840: Napoleon Bonaparte's Ashes Arrive in Paris and are Transported to Les Invalides This evocative image captures a significant moment in French history as the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte, the legendary military and political leader, are brought into Paris for interment at Les Invalides. The scene unfolds on a wintry December day in 1840, as a solemn procession makes its way through the city streets, transporting the emperor's ashes from Rueil-Malmaison to their final resting place. Napoleon Bonaparte, who ruled as Emperor of the French from 1804 until his abdication in 1814, had been exiled to the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean following the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He died on May 5, 1821, and his body was preserved and transported to France in a lead casket, accompanied by a military honor guard. The procession, led by a military band and followed by a long line of soldiers, makes its way through the bustling streets of Paris, surrounded by onlookers who have gathered to pay their respects to the fallen emperor. The mood is somber and reverent, as the city comes together to mark this historic moment. Upon arrival at Les Invalides, Napoleon's ashes are interred in the grand dome of the church of the Dôme des Invalides, which had been specially designed to house the remains of the imperial family. The scene is a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of Napoleon Bonaparte and the profound impact he had on French history.
