EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing photograph print captures the memorable and eccentric moment when John Mytton, an English aristocrat from the village of Acton in Shropshire, decided to add an unexpected element of excitement to a dinner party in 1834. The image, taken from an 1836 publication, depicts Mytton astride a bear as it enters the dining room, surrounded by astonished guests. The scene is filled with consternation and high spirits, as the practical joke had gone awry. Mytton, known for his eccentricities, had a penchant for the unconventional and the extraordinary. He was a descendant of the Mytton family of Acton, who had a long-standing tradition of owning bears. John, in his youth, had even been given a bear cub as a pet, which he had grown to adulthood. The dinner party, which took place at Apperley Hall in 1834, was meant to be a high-society event. However, Mytton, in his usual practical joking manner, decided to ride the bear into the dining room as a surprise for his guests. The bear, however, had other plans, and bit Mytton on the calf, causing quite a commotion. The doctor was promptly called, and the guests were left in a state of shock and amusement. Mytton, although injured, was reported to have laughed it off, much to the relief of his guests. The incident became a popular scene in English history, and the photograph print serves as a reminder of the eccentricities and practical jokes that were once a part of high society.
