Unfortunately, most of the old town was destroyed by a single fire on 18th August 1917, accidentally sparked by French soldiers in encampments at the city (as depicted on this postcard). The fire left some 72, 000 homeless, many of them Turkish, of a population of approximately 271, 157 at the time. This card was sent in October 1917 by a French soldier based at the camp. Date: 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative postcard captures a moment of respite amidst the chaos and hardships of the Allied camp in Thessaloniki, Greece during World War I. In 1915, a large Allied expeditionary force, including French troops, landed at Thessaloniki as the base for operations against pro-German Bulgaria. The camp, as depicted on this postcard, was a bustling hub of activity with soldiers from various nations living and working in close quarters. Unfortunately, the old town of Thessaloniki was destroyed by a devastating fire on August 18, 1917, accidentally sparked by French soldiers in the encampments at the city. The fire left an estimated 72,000 people homeless, many of them Turkish, in a population of approximately 271,157 at the time. This postcard was sent in October 1917 by a French soldier based at the camp, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the soldiers stationed there. The image of musicians playing in the camp is a poignant reminder of the human spirit that endured even in the midst of the hardships of war. Thessaloniki, also known as Salonika or Salonica, was a major port city in the Mediterranean and a melting pot of cultures. The city had a rich history, and the fire destroyed many of its historic landmarks, including the Rotunda of Galerius, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This postcard is a fascinating historical artifact that offers insights into a pivotal moment in the history of Thessaloniki and the broader context of World War I. It serves as a reminder of the human impact of war and the resilience of the human spirit.
