EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Justice William Ventris Field in 1875, following his appointment as a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench. At the time, Field was already an esteemed figure in the legal world, having made a name for himself as a common law lawyer and a leading advocate for individual liberties and the rule of law. Born in 1813, Field's legal career began in earnest after he was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1837. Over the next several decades, he would become a trusted advisor to several prime ministers and a respected voice in the House of Commons. His commitment to justice and the common good earned him numerous accolades, including a knighthood in 1866. In 1875, Field's hard work and dedication paid off when he was appointed as a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench. The Court of Queen's Bench was the highest civil court in England and Wales, and Field's appointment was a significant honor. In this role, he would preside over a wide range of cases, from commercial disputes to criminal matters. Despite his many accomplishments, Field's career was not yet complete. In 1890, he was raised to the peerage, becoming Baron Field of Bakeham. This title granted him a seat in the House of Lords, where he continued to advocate for justice and the rule of law until his death in 1907. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in Field's illustrious career, as he stands before the bench, ready to deliver justice to those who came before him. With his stern yet compassionate expression and impeccable attire, Field embodies the dignity and integrity of the English legal system. This image is a testament to his enduring legacy as a champion of justice and a respected figure in the annals of English legal history.
