The illustration, believed to have been created circa 1520, depicts a series of fantastical creatures reportedly encountered by early travelers in the region. The central figure, a towering, serpentine monster with the head of a jaguar, is said to have terrorized the indigenous peoples living in the dense jungles of Guatemala. Its sinuous body is adorned with intricate, geometric patterns, reflecting the intricate and sophisticated artistic traditions of the ancient Maya civilization.
