EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image, entitled "Monsters Reported in Guatemala," transports us back in time to the early 16th century, a period when the New World was still shrouded in mystery and intrigue for European explorers. The print, sourced from the extensive archives of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich folk lore and mythology that flourished in the vibrant and diverse cultures of Guatemala before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. The illustration, believed to have been created circa 1520, depicts a series of fantastical creatures reportedly encountered by early travelers in the region. The central figure, a towering, serpentine monster with the head of a jaguar, is said to have terrorized the indigenous peoples living in the dense jungles of Guatemala. Its sinuous body is adorned with intricate, geometric patterns, reflecting the intricate and sophisticated artistic traditions of the ancient Maya civilization. To the left of the central monster, a fearsome dragon-like creature with the wings of a bat and the body of a crocodile, is shown devouring a hapless human victim. This terrifying beast, known as the "Tlalocan Dragon," was said to inhabit the swamps and marshes of Guatemala, wreaking havoc on the local population. The final creature in this trio of monstrous beings is a grotesque, hunchbacked figure with the head of a bird and the body of a man. Known as the "Chortis Birdman," this enigmatic creature was believed to possess the power to heal the sick and ward off evil spirits. Despite its fearsome appearance, it was revered as a protector and a symbol of hope in the face of the unknown. This print serves as a poignant reminder of the rich and varied mythology that once thrived in the lands of Guatemala, a testament to the resilience and creativity of the human spirit in the face of the unknown.
