EDITORS COMMENTS
This image portrays Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known by his stage name Molière, in the later years of his illustrious career as a French playwright. Born on January 15, 1622, in Paris, Molière's passion for the arts began at an early age. He studied under the renowned actor and director Jean Richer, and later joined the Illustre Théâtre, a touring company that performed comedies and farces. Molière's talent for writing and acting soon brought him to the attention of Cardinal Mazarin, who invited him to create and perform for the royal court. In 1658, Molière founded his own theatrical troupe, known as "L'Illustre Théâtre," which would later be renamed "La Troupe de Monsieur." This photograph, taken from the Petitot collection, captures Molière in the prime of his artistic life. The image, believed to have been taken around 1673, shows the playwright in a thoughtful pose, with a quill pen in hand and a stack of papers on the table before him. The expression on his face suggests deep concentration, as if he is in the midst of composing one of his famous comedies. Molière's plays, which often satirized the social and political issues of his time, were both popular and controversial. His works, such as "Tartuffe," "The Misanthrope," and "The Imaginary Invalid," continue to be performed and studied around the world today. Molière's influence on French literature and theater is immeasurable, and his legacy as a master of comedy endures.
