This image captures the essence of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known by his stage name Molière (1622-1673), a legendary figure in the world of French literature and theater. Born in Paris on January 15, 1622, Molière began his career as an actor and later became a playwright, director, and producer. His innovative works, which often satirized the societal norms and values of his time, revolutionized the French theater scene. This photograph, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, is believed to depict Molière in his later years, around 1673, when he was at the pinnacle of his success. The image, titled "Molière (Allouard, Baptiste)" by an unknown photographer, shows the renowned playwright in a thoughtful pose, deep in contemplation.
