EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment when American aviator John Moisant made aviation history by becoming the first person to fly a plane across the English Channel from Paris to London. Taken in August 17, 1910, Moisant's daring feat was made even more remarkable by the fact that he was accompanied by his mechanic and a mischievous kitten, making them the first air passengers to make the crossing. Born in the United States but based in France, Moisant was a pioneering figure in early aviation. He was a skilled pilot and a daring adventurer, known for his love of pushing the boundaries of what was possible in the air. For this record-breaking flight, Moisant chose to fly a Bleriot monoplane, a sleek and innovative design that was well-suited to the challenge of crossing the Channel. Despite the risks involved, Moisant was determined to make the flight, and he set off from Le Crotoy airfield in northern France with his mechanic, Charles W. Spencer, and the curious kitten by his side. The flight was not without its challenges, as Moisant encountered strong headwinds and turbulent weather during the crossing. But he persevered, and after an epic journey of just over two hours, he touched down safely at Le Bourget airfield near Paris. This photograph captures the excitement and sense of adventure that surrounded Moisant's historic flight. With his mechanic and mascot kitten by his side, Moisant had proven that the skies were no longer the exclusive domain of birds, but could be explored by humans as well. This image is a testament to the courage and ingenuity of early aviators and the spirit of exploration that drove them to push the boundaries of what was possible.
