13th 1800 1850 1874 Fillmore Millard

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking 19th century photograph captures the likeness of Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States, who served from 1850 to 1853. The image, taken around 1874, provides a unique glimpse into the facial features and appearance of this important historical figure. Fillmore's white hair, framing his square face, adds to his distinguished and wise appearance. His piercing eyes, set deep in his face, convey a sense of intensity and determination. Millard Fillmore was born in Summerhill, New York, in 1800, and rose to prominence as a member of the Whig Party. He served as the 27th Governor of New York before being elected to the presidency in 1850. Fillmore's presidency was marked by the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, which required the return of runaway slaves to their owners, a controversial measure that fueled tensions between the North and South and contributed to the growing divide leading to the Civil War. Despite the controversy surrounding his presidency, Fillmore is also remembered for his efforts to improve diplomatic relations with Great Britain and for his appointment of the first chief justice of the Supreme Court who was not a native-born American, Robert C. Grier. This photograph, taken decades after his presidency, offers a poignant reminder of the complex and multifaceted legacy of Millard Fillmore, an American president who played a significant role in shaping the nation's history.
